UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): 13.4 Million Issued Since Launch
Published on August 21, 2025
Between October 2023 and June 2025, the United Kingdom has issued 13.4 million Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs) to visa-exempt travelers.
The ETA system was created to modernize and strengthen the UK’s border entry procedures, allowing authorities to pre-screen visitors before they arrive — much like the U.S. ESTA or Canada’s eTA.
A Gradual Rollout from 2023 to 2025
The introduction of the ETA took place in several stages:
-
October 2023: The system was first launched for selected Gulf countries, including Qatar, in a pilot phase to test the platform and its automated verification tools.
-
November 2024: The rollout expanded to additional nationalities, notably U.S. citizens, due to the high volume of travel between the United States and the UK.
-
March 2025: A major expansion included European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and Swiss citizens, making ETAs mandatory for all trips starting April 2, 2025.
13.4 Million ETAs Granted
In May 2025, the UK government reported having issued 5.4 million ETAs since the program’s launch.
Just one month later, the Home Office announced a dramatic increase:
“There have been 13.4 million ETAs granted since the introduction of the scheme in October 2023 up to the end of June 2025,” the statement read.
This sharp rise — nearly 8 million additional authorisations in three months — is largely attributed to the inclusion of EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens, who now represent almost half of all ETA applications.
Top 10 Nationalities Receiving UK ETAs
According to official data, the United States leads by a wide margin, followed by Germany and France.
The strong presence of European travelers reflects the impact of the new ETA requirement that came into force in April 2025.
A Streamlined Process — and Assistance Available
The UK ETA can be requested online through the government’s official platform or via the UK ETA mobile app (available for iOS and Android).
The application process is entirely digital: travelers submit their personal information, upload their passport, and receive a response usually within a few hours to several days. Once approved, the ETA remains valid for two years (or until the traveler’s passport expires) and allows multiple short stays of up to six months each.
For those who prefer assistance with the application, several travel agencies — such as visaauth.com — now offer services to simplify and secure the ETA request process. These agencies help applicants ensure their information and documents meet the UK authorities’ requirements, reducing the risk of delays or rejections.
A New Era for UK Border Management
The expansion of the ETA system marks a major step in the UK’s post-Brexit border strategy.
Authorities emphasize that this measure enhances security, efficiency, and traveler screening, while also signaling a lasting shift in the way Europe-to-UK travel is managed.
For millions of visitors planning to tour London, attend business events, or visit family across the UK, the ETA has become an essential — and now familiar — step before departure.
